The S/V (Sailing Vessel) Denis Sullivan is a recreation of a three-masted 19th century Great Lakes schooner. Tall ships like this were the mainstay of cargo hauling on the Great Lakes for over 75 years from the mid-1800s until well into the 1900s.
Construction of the Denis Sullivan began in Milwaukee in 1995 and was completed in 2000. The ship was built of authentic materials using traditional boat building tools and methods. It now sails throughout the Great Lakes and beyond as Wisconsin’s official flagship.
On a pleasant late-summer evening, about a dozen members of my camera club, the Milwaukee Photo Pictorialists and I enjoyed a two-hour cruise in Lake Michigan off the Milwaukee harbor. The pictures below share my memories of the trip.
P.S. To view more of my tall ship photography, including additional photos of the Denis Sullivan in port and under sail, visit Tall Ships in Port on my companion web site, BlockPhotos.com.
Very nice set of photos, Phil! I enjoyed the sail equally well.
